Required Identity Elements

All Web pages that are hosted on an Oregon State domain space (oregonstate.edu) are required to use either the orange or black Web banner at the top of the page.

There are three primary elements of the OSU Web standards. When used consistently, they help create a unified look and feel for the OSU Web.

  • Orange or black banner with OSU logo (required)
  • Typography standards (recommended)
  • Color palette (recommended)

In addition, there are a number of other standardized elements that can be used to enhance usability and visual consistency. These elements comprise a "kit of parts" that will speed up the development of your Web Site. Elements that are unique to your site can be added as a customized feature, as needed. Other standardized elements include:

  • Global navigation elements (utility and audience links)
  • Site title
  • Photo and text blocks
  • Navigation panel
  • Content buffers
  • Graphical elements (e.g., anchors, "GO" button)

All of these elements are currently used within the OSU central Web pages and are available as part of the OSU Web Templates. The Faculty/Staff page is a good example of an OSU Web Site that uses the full range of identity elements.

For more information on how to build a Web Site using these elements, take a look at Template Builder. This intuitive new tool created specifically for OSU Web developers allows you to create a customized template within minutes. The coding is built automatically and is ready to use.
