Hydrophiles Winter 2000 Field Trip
Urban Watershed Issues:  Johnson Creek and the Columbia Slough

Afternoon:  Columbia Slough

Taking a look at the big picture of the Columbia Slough.  Dave Hendricks explains the challenges associated with management of the Slough at the Multnomah County Drainage District #1 offices.

A view of the berm separating the upper from the lower portions of the Columbia Slough.

Pumps used to move stormwater draining from the northwest area of Portland into the lower Slough.

The Whitaker Ponds environmental education and restoration area, and former junkyard.

Junked vehicles and piles of tires have been replaced by extensive plantings of native vegetation.  Note the supports for seedlings in the foreground.

Multiple small stormwater detention basins to slow, filter and treat runoff prior to entering the ponds have been constructed on the property.

Many thanks to Daniela Brod (BES) and Susan Barthal (BES) for setting up excellent tours of the watersheds, and to Karl Lee (USGS) and  Dan Snyder (USGS) for a great seminar and tour of the gauging station, and to all the other people from BES, MCDD and Whitaker Ponds who contributed to the trip.
