Hydrophiles Field Trips

OSU Hydrophiles Spring Outing, 2006

1st Annual Leal A. K. Mertes Memorial River Trip

Leal Mertes (1957—2005) was an interdisciplinary scientist with BS degrees in both Geology and Biology from Stanford University and MS and PhD degrees in Geology from the University of Washington.  Her research investigated the geomorphic and hydrologic processes responsible for the development of wetlands and floodplains in large river systems and to develop remote sensing techniques for analysis of wetlands and water properties. She was an extraordinary educator, scholar, and colleague and her life was an inspiration to many.

When:      Sunday, May 21st, departing OSU at 9:00AM.

Where:     The McKenzie River, from Finn Rock to Helfrich Boat Landing

What:      This is a 10-mile section of the river that, with lunch will take about 3/4 of the day. Most of the rapids are rated Class II and there is one Class III rapid near the end. The difficulty is appropriate for first-time rafters and others who want to take inflatable kayaks. Experienced whitewater kayakers: bring your own boats and gear and we’ll search for some good surf holes! Gordon Grant, our resident expert on the McKenzie River and will be guiding a drift boat and sharing his knowledge of the hydrology and geomorphology of the river.

Gear:       Inflatable kayaks (IKs) and necessary gear (paddle, helmet, etc.) can be rented through the OSU Outdoor Rec Center as well as Peak Sports.
You will need to reserve your IK package early! Limited space will be available on a guided drift boat and a raft. Let us know if you prefer to ride along on a guided boat. Everyone is required to wear a personal floatation device (PFD). These can be rented from the ORC or Peak Sports. Wetsuits and/or splash jackets are also recommended for people on boats.

Lunch:     Bring your own lunch. We will stop part way down and enjoy lunch on a scenic gravel bar and may have the opportunity to enjoy the hot springs along the way.
