CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will be the primary education sponsor of this year's Portland ITEC Conference on Dec. 11-12, and OSU engineering alumnus and Intel Vice President James A. Johnson will deliver the keynote address.

The conference, which is Portland's premier information technology event of the year, attracts hundreds of technology companies from the Pacific Northwest to display their latest technology and seek connections with customers, vendors, and future employees.

"Because the OSU College of Engineering educates a significant percentage of the workforce at local technology companies, this is a great avenue for us to showcase our academic excellence and our research capabilities," said Ron Adams, dean of the College of Engineering.

OSU President Paul Risser says the conference is also an opportunity for OSU to display how universities can have an impact on the Oregon economic outlook.

"Throughout Oregon, companies are struggling to meet the challenges posed by our economy," Risser said. "Education and technology continue to be answers to our future economic stability and growth."

This year, OSU will highlight the College of Engineering's growing partnerships with Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, PSC Inc. and many other companies that are coming to OSU for cost-effective research results from specialized campus laboratories.

One such lab that OSU will feature at the conference is the Mobile Technology Solutions Laboratory, a research facility in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering that specializes in finding wireless barcode-oriented technology solutions for industry, government agencies such as the U.S. Post Office, and other organizations.

Johnson, a 1984 graduate of the OSU Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, is a vice president at Intel. His company recently contributed the equipment to develop a wireless network throughout the College of Engineering and in several math and science buildings, the Memorial Union, and the new Kelley Engineering Center.
