Welcome to LEAP,Leadership, Education and Partnership. LEAP is Oregon State University’s initiative
in the Kellogg Foundation’s Leadership for Institutional Change (LINC) Project. The focus of LINC is to
allow each of the participating institutions to engage in a yearlong exploration of issues related to transforming their
campus, specifically, and Land Grant colleges and universities, generally. At OSU we have the opportunity to shape our
Initiative in the way that we believe will best accomplish the learning and path to growth that we identify for ourselves.
Throughout 1998-1999 a study group comprised of volunteers will attend national symposia, participate in learning
experiences we design for ourselves, study the experiences of other institutions, and seek out learning opportunities at
the national and regional level.
LEAP is designed to be a collaborative experience through which we will explore institutional transformation and
collective leadership. We will study theories of leadership, explore models of leadership, discuss and debate approaches
to leadership – all with the goal of increasing our individual and collective knowledge.
Guiding Principles
The primary goal for 1998-99 is increasing learning, not effecting change.
We will explore what is necessary to create a sustainable model for the practice of collective leadership at Oregon
State University.
We will engage a "living systems" versus linear approach to leadership.
Our focus will be on learning, with the belief that learning drives change.
We will strive to invent/create ways that work for us.
We will strive to be "future-driven" as opposed to "past-pushed."
We will attempt to create a public voice for our vision – declare our preferred future and desired change.
We will create leadership within the context of a series of partnerships.
We will confront the challenge of developing the capacity to look inward and outward concurrently.
We will ultimately attempt to strengthen institutional commitment to long-term change.
